Office Christmas Party Games For A Small Team

Most lists of office Christmas party ideas are written for companies with a ballroom and an events budget. A team of five in a meeting room needs something else: games that work with a handful of people, need no facilitator and still feel like a party.

Office parties are still a big deal. A 2023 Challenger, Gray & Christmas survey found that nearly two-thirds of US companies were holding in-person holiday parties. For a small team, the challenge isn't whether to celebrate. It's what to actually do.

What makes an office Christmas game actually work

Good office party games have a few things in common:

Games that need no equipment or facilitator

Two truths and a lie, holiday edition. Each person shares three holiday facts about themselves. Everyone guesses the lie. Takes zero prep and works with any group size.

Secret Santa with a twist. Everyone brings a small wrapped gift under an agreed price. Draw numbers, and each person can open a new gift or steal one already opened.

Christmas quiz in teams. Mix departments on each team. Keep the questions light: holiday films, the year in the office, Christmas traditions around the world.

Murder mystery. Lists of office party ideas often suggest a murder mystery for small teams. It's a great night out if your team likes acting in character, but it needs scripts, roles and some prep.

Escape the Ahti for teams of 2–8 (or two crews at 6–8)

For a team that wants something between a quiz and a murder mystery, we made Escape the Ahti. It's a cooperative escape game that everyone plays on their own phone, in the same room.

The story: the submarine Ahti lies on the seabed with 50 minutes of air. Each player takes a station, such as Captain, Engineer or Navigator, and sees information the others don't. You can't show your screen, so every lock gets solved by talking. The quiet colleague who reads the chart carefully is often the one who cracks it.

With 6 to 8 players, the team splits into two crews who race through the same six locks against a shared clock. It's a friendly competition where everyone is still playing.

What to plan around it

  1. Buy the link a few days early and share it in the team chat. It works for 30 days.
  2. Ask everyone to charge their phone.
  3. Play before dinner while energy is high, or right after dessert as the main event.
  4. Leave ten minutes to talk about it. Who figured out the sonar? Which crew got stuck on the minefield?

FAQ for organizers

Does anyone need to install an app?

No. The game runs in the phone's browser. Nobody needs an account.

How many people can play on one purchase?

Two to eight, on up to eight phones. A bigger team splits into groups, and each group needs its own purchase.

What if we don't finish in time?

When the air runs out, the gauge switches to reserve and you can still play to the end. Every lock has hints if the team gets stuck.

Is it available in other languages?

The games are in English and Finnish. Each group picks one language.
